The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently released a letter to insurance plans, preparing them for the transition that will happen as COVID-19 vaccines are privatized. The letter was written by Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
President Biden’s administration purchased millions of COVID-19 vaccines during the height of the pandemic so they could be available to all Americans with no out-of-pocket expense. Since the administration announced the end of the pandemic’s emergency declaration, officials have prepared to transition from federally funded vaccines to vaccines purchased directly from vaccine manufacturers.
“To be clear, that shift has not yet occurred, and the currently authorized and approved COVID-19 vaccines continue to be free and widely available nationwide,” Administrator Brooks-LaSure stated. “Thank you for your continued efforts to address the effects of COVID-19, even after the end of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) declared under the Public Health Service Act.”
